Another interesting Mayan site that is easily accessible from Cancún’s main resort area-this one located at the north end of the main beaches-is the El Meco Archaeological Site. Originally inhabited around AD 300, it rose to prominence as a Mayan trade center from the 1100s until its decline after the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century. Of particular interest is the 12.5-meter-tall El Castillo, the only pyramid of its kind to have been built in the area. Perched atop the pyramid are the remains of an old temple from which you’ll be rewarded with stunning views over the coastline and Isla Mujeres. This easy one-hour or so visit is well worth adding to your Cancún itinerary.

Isla is more laid-back and tranquil than Cancun, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to do, it just means you can do nothing at all or fill your day with shopping, snorkeling, exploring, eating the freshest seafood in the Mexican Caribbean and drinking in that special magical atmosphere that is Isla Mujeres. Rent a golf cart or bicycle to explore the island and see the sites, take a yoga class and get a massage. Swim with the Dolphins, Whale Sharks or Sailfish. “Catch the Big One” on a deep sea fishing trip and dive the world famous MUSA, the largest underwater sculpture museum. Spend a day visiting eco theme parks Xcaret, Xel-Ha, or Xplor. Swim in a Cenote and discover the Civilization of the Maya at Tulum, Chichen Itza, Coba and El Mecco.

La Tortuga Granja – Turtle Farm: Located on Sac Bajo is La Tortuga Granja, the hatching ground for the sea turtles on Isla Mujeres. From May to September these grand creatures lay their eggs in the soft sand where volunteers assist in gathering the eggs and placing them in pens to keep them safe from predators. From August to October, you can witness the local children and tourists releasing the turtles into the ocean. As with the whale sharks, it is recommended that you don’t touch the sea turtles. Entrance fee is $3.00 per person. Eat Tasty Food: You’re in Mexico, so it comes as no surprise that the food in Isla Mujeres is amazing! If you’re looking for quirky things to do in Isla Mujeres, you can check out the Floating Bottle Island. Created a few years back by Richart Sowa, this floating recycler’s dream is completely built using used plastic water bottles and recycled materials, including a three story house and an outdoor bar. You’ll need to talk to the locals about its current location, since the floating house moves around the island from time to time. There is a small entrance fee. Punta Sur is located at the far southern edge of Isla Mujeres, Punta Sur features not only the highest elevation in all the Yucatan, but it’s also the easternmost point in all of Mexico. That’s right, the sun hits Punta Sur before anywhere else in Mexico and we’ve heard that it’s a glorious sight.

Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is famous for its amazing cenotes, natural pools formed in limestone caves. The entire Riviera Maya is covered with thousands of cenotes, many of them you can swim in. Cenotes are created when the limestone surface collapses, creating an opening into the Yucatan’s large underground river system. Most people visit them to go swimming, scuba diving or snorkeling. Some of the best cenotes near Cancun are located along the Ruta De Cenotes (Cenote Route) near the city of Puerto Morelos, about a 30-minute drive away.
